FOMO - Fear of Missing Out - Colleen Bruce Coaching

FOMO – Fear of Missing Out

Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) is a phenomenon in which an individual experiences anxiety or distress over the potential of missing out on an opportunity, event, or social experience. It is often fueled by social media and the desire to always be connected and engaged in what is happening around them, leading to a feeling of pressure to constantly participate in social activities or experiences.

Individuals who are more likely to experience “Fear of Missing Out” (FOMO) tend to be those who have

  • wanting the success they see or perceive to see
  • a strong need for social validation and comparison
  • a tendency towards impulsiveness
  • a lower sense of self-esteem
  • a need/want to perform well
  • advice/recommendation from someone they would like to emulate
  • people who are highly attached to social media

There is nothing wrong with signing up for coaching or learning programs and people sign up for various reasons. Some common ones include:

  1. Personal or professional development: to improve their skills or knowledge in a certain area
  2. Career advancement: to gain new skills or certifications that can help with career progression
  3. Fulfillment or hobby: to pursue a personal interest or passion
  4. Curiosity or exploration: to try something new and learn more about different topics
  5. Solution to a problem: to find a solution to a personal or professional challenge they are facing.

It’s important to reflect on why you specifically sign up for these programs and if they are helping you achieve your goals.

  • are you procrasta-learning
  • do you believe in yourself & in your program or product
  • do you have a clear start & end – are you focused
  • are you honestly going to put in the work
  • is this program or coaching going to get you where you truly want to be
  • are you building your business on purpose
  • do you have a strategy or business plan & does this fit
  • are they your people – or is it just shiny object syndrome

To get over Fear Of Missing Out (FOMO), you can try the following strategies:

  1. Reframe your perspective
  2. Focus on what you have and what you are grateful for, instead of what others have that you don’t.
  3. Practice mindfulness: Be present in the moment and fully engaged in what you are doing.
  4. Set boundaries
  5. Limit your exposure to social media and other triggers that contribute to your FOMO.
  6. Prioritize your values: Focus on what truly matters to you and align your actions with your values.
  7. Focus on personal growth: Focus on developing new skills and expanding your horizons in a way that feels fulfilling to you.
  8. Lean into inspired action.
  9. Make space for what is coming – it’s okay to have a blank hour in the day. Leave room for spirit to work

Remember, everyone’s path is unique and you can create a life that brings you joy and fulfillment without comparing yourself to others. March to the beat of your own drum.
